What Information Can Crime Stoppers Take

What Information Can Crime Stoppers Take?

If you want to report a crime but are worried about your details being shared, Crime Stoppers can help. However, you may have some concerns about what information is appropriate to pass on to us. Read on to find out what information we’re interested in and how we keep you anonymous.

What is Crime Stoppers?

Crime Stoppers is a registered charity in Bermuda (no. 410) that collects information about crimes from anonymous reporters. Anyone can use our online form or 24-hour phone line. This information is then passed on to the relevant authorities, without any identifying information.

We also provide cash rewards for information leading to arrests, to encourage reluctant people to come forward.

What crimes are we interested in?

We are particularly interested in publicised requests for information, but we also accept details of other crimes that you have witnessed or know of.

The categories on our online form include:

  • School related events and bullying
  • Fugitives and wanted people
  • Drugs
  • Abuse
  • Weapons

However, there are a few things that we cannot take reports about. If there is an emergency in progress, you need to contact the police directly. Similarly, if you are the victim of a crime, you should contact the police as they will need to know who you are.

Other crimes that we cannot take information about include:

  • Benefit fraud
  • Scam emails, texts or phone calls
  • Untaxed or abandoned vehicles
  • Noise complaints
  • Missing people

What details do we take?

All of the information that Crime Stoppers takes from you is about the crime. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The location of the crime, including the address or nearby landmarks
  • Whether your report is in response to a news story
  • The date and time of the event
  • Details of suspects
  • Vehicles involved
  • Other people with knowledge of the crime

This information is then compiled into a report. If you accidentally give us any identifying information, this will not appear in the report.

How is identifying information protected?

Our call centre does not display the number that you are calling from, and calls are never recorded. Our online form does not track your IP address. We will also never take your name.

If you want a cash reward for information leading to an arrest, you can request a code at the initial point of contact. It’s then up to you to contact us and follow up, so that we don’t have to take any contact information.

Please keep in mind that here we are specifically talking about when you report a crime. If you engage with us in other ways outside of our anonymous reporting system, such as by email or on social media, we will see different information.
