“Victims’ Voices Lead the Way”
This year’s theme for the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons highlights the importance of listening to and learning from survivors of human trafficking. Survivors are key actors in the fight against human trafficking. They play a crucial role in establishing effective measures to prevent this crime, identifying and rescuing victims and supporting them on their road to rehabilitation.
Many victims of human trafficking have experienced ignorance or misunderstanding in their attempts to get help. They have had traumatic post-rescue experiences during identification interviews and legal proceedings. Some have faced revictimization and punishment for crimes they were forced to commit by their traffickers. Others have been subjected to stigmatization or received inadequate support.
Learning from victims’ experiences and turning their suggestions into concrete actions will lead to a more victim-centred and effective approach in combating human trafficking.
Crime Stoppers Bermuda, an affiliated member of CBLA Crime Stoppers Foundation, is pleased to announce that we have joined forces against human trafficking. CBLA has partnered with UNODC and the Blue Heart Campaign to create a visual awareness campaign using ‘different shoes’ which symbolizes their use by victims of the sex trade who share clothing and shoes with other victims that are supplied by the human traffickers.
The Blue Heart Campaign…
is a UNODC global awareness initiative to fight human trafficking and its impact on society. It seeks to encourage involvement from government, civil society, the corporate sector and individuals alike, to inspire action and help prevent this heinous crime.
The Blue Heart is increasingly recognized as the international symbol against human trafficking, representing the sadness of those who are trafficked while reminding us of the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.
The ‘shoe campaign’ allows people to show their solidarity with the victims of human trafficking and increasing their visibility through the Blue Heart symbol.
