4 Modern Crime Trends to Be Aware Of
Nowadays, it feels like new scams and crimes are constantly popping up. Many of these crimes rely on unsuspecting victims, so it’s important to stay aware of new crimes. Here are four modern crimes that can catch people out.
1. Money transfer scams
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be your bank, you should always be wary. Criminals can hide their numbers and pretend to be from your bank, often under the guise of an “emergency” that needs your attention. They may even have some of your information and be looking for more.
Never give your details to a caller, and never transfer money when they ask. Scam artists can be after your money, your identity or even using you as an accessory to money laundering. If in doubt, hang up and call the bank yourself. This way, you can be sure who you’re talking to.
2. Fake home services
Burglars can dress up as plumbers, electricians and gas engineers to gain entry to your house and then steal things. Always be wary of unexpected visitors, even if they claim to be there to carry out work. Companies are aware of these scams, so many workers carry IDs that you can ask to see. Don’t be afraid to question them – it’s better to be safe than sorry!
3. AI scams
Artificial Intelligence has greatly improved over the last few years. This opens the door to many useful tools, but also creates new opportunities for criminals. Some of the more serious uses include deep fake images and false political content, aimed to ruin our view of a person or group. Websites can also create AI images of products to make them seem better quality than they really are – if they even exist at all.
The best way to avoid AI image scams is to familiarise yourself with the signs of an AI image. Pay attention to the details, as AI images still often have flaws if you look closely enough.
4. Needle spiking
You are probably aware of drink spiking, but you may not have heard of needle spiking. They have a similar goal – getting drugs into a victim’s body, usually with the intention of robbing or sexually assaulting them. The difference is that needle spikers inject victims rather than putting something in their drink.
Especially in crowded areas, people who have been drinking may not even notice the tiny needle being inserted. Stay safe by keeping your arms and legs covered as much as possible and staying in groups. If you or a friend feel suddenly unwell, drowsy or unsteady, speak to a member of staff.
