7 Great Tools for Crime Prevention
Nobody wants to be the victim of a crime. However, certain openings in security make it much easier for criminals to target you. Here are a few tools that can make it much more difficult for someone to commit a crime.
1. Home alarms
Burglary is one of the most common crimes in Bermuda. Installing a home alarm system can help detect trespassers and scare them off before committing any further crimes. There are many different types of system, depending on your requirements – some can even detect flooding or vulnerable people taking a fall.
2. Outdoor lighting
Similarly, outdoor lighting decreases the chance of a burglar getting in undetected. Burglars rely on shadows and obscured views to sneak into your property, so lighting up your porch, garden and driveway makes your home a significantly trickier target. If the cost of permanent overnight lighting is a problem, you can install a motion sensor that only uses lighting when someone is there.
3. Wrist straps
Another common crime in Bermuda is pickpocketing and snatching belongings. Attaching important items such as your phone or wallet to your body makes them much more difficult to swipe. You can get straps that attach to your wrist or neck, but make sure that they don’t have a pull clasp that allows them to be taken off easily!
4. Safes
Keeping all of your most important or valuable items in a safe makes them inaccessible to sticky fingers. You can even buy safes that remotely warn you when they are opened, adding an extra layer of protection. Travel safes are also helpful, but make sure that they are tied down somehow to avoid the whole thing being taken.
5. Bike locks
Bike thieves are rampant in Bermuda. Using an alarmed bike lock prevents your bike from being stolen. If you rent bikes to tourists, make sure they understand the importance of locking up your bikes – they are by far the most vulnerable target!
6. Drink covers and stoppers
Drink spiking is an awful way to end a night out. There are various tools that you can buy to cover the top of your drink, such as bottle stoppers and elastic caps. Whether you primarily drink out of bottles or cups, make sure that the method you choose is compatible and that you know how to use it effectively.
7. Community
Making the most of your local community is often overlooked, but it can be a valuable tool in stopping crime. Neighbourhood group chats and forums have become a popular way to share concerns and spot patterns, as they keep everyone in the loop. You could also join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
