Celebrating Bermudian Film at the 8th Annual Crime Stoppers Bermuda Film Experience
At this year’s 8th Annual Crime Stoppers Bermuda Film Experience, we were delighted to showcase not one, but three incredible films made right here in Bermuda. These films highlighted the depth of talent and storytelling within our island’s creative community, and we were thrilled to share them with our audience.
The Waterboyz
The Waterboyz, a gripping film that takes viewers into the rough streets of Atlanta, where Drew, a young man commonly referred to as a “Waterboy,” sells water on bustling street corners to earn a living. While his mother, Rose, worries about the dangers of his chosen path, Drew finds guidance from local entrepreneur Charles Williams. However, his journey becomes perilous when he crosses paths with local gangster Lil Zoo, leading to deadly consequences. This film resonated with many as it explored themes of survival, mentorship, and the harsh realities of street life.
Bull Street
On the second night, we presented Bull Street, a powerful legal drama that follows LouEster Sadie Gibbs, a determined 39-year-old personal injury lawyer whose family’s homeownership is called into question. Raised by her grandmother, Mrs. Big-Gal, in a house filled with love and tradition, LouEster must fight to protect her home from an entitled Ivy League lawyer who challenges their ownership. As Judge Motley deliberates the case, the film raises thought-provoking questions about privilege, justice, and the meaning of true ownership. The audience was captivated by this compelling story that speaks to the heart of Bermudian heritage and resilience.
Thoughts Become Things
To round out our celebration of Bermudian cinema, we showcased Thoughts Become Things, a mesmerizing short film that takes audiences on a breathtaking journey with a young Bermudian Gombey. As he encounters his ancestors, the film beautifully captures the essence of the Bermuda Gombey and the rich cultural history that defines our island. With its poetic storytelling and stunning visuals, this short film left a lasting impact on viewers and reminded us of the power of heritage and identity.
A Celebration of Bermuda’s Talent
We are incredibly proud to have provided a platform for these Bermudian-made films at this year’s event. Each film brought unique and powerful storytelling to the screen, showcasing the incredible talent within our local film industry. The Crime Stoppers Bermuda Film Experience has always been about more than just movies—it’s about sparking conversations, inspiring change, and celebrating the voices that need to be heard.
We extend our gratitude to all the filmmakers, actors, and crew members who made these films possible, and to our audience for supporting our event.
