What Happens After You Report a Crime?

Reporting a crime to Crime Stoppers can lead to justice, safer streets and even reward money. However, this doesn’t happen instantly. If you have just reported a crime to us, you might be wondering what happens next. Here is the path your information follows after you report via our online form or phone line.

Your report is compiled and anonymised

When you give us information, it is collected by a trained team in Miami, Florida. Your phone number and IP address are not recorded, making you untraceable.

After you hang up or press submit, our team gets to work on writing up any information that you give us into a report. If you have inadvertently given us identifying information, this will be removed. They will also not include any information about how you sound, or any speculation about your identity.

This edited report is then sent to us electronically.

The report is given to the relevant authority

Once your report is ready, we give it directly to the relevant agency. This could be the police themselves, or it could be a federal agency like Bermuda Customs. They will then begin to research your information and decide whether it is credible, but will be unaware that the information came from a Crime Stoppers informant.

Your information is used to solve crimes

Once the recipient of your tip has deemed it usable, they will begin to act on it. The process could potentially be quite a long one. An anonymous tip is not enough to grant a search or arrest warrant, but could be used alongside evidence to gain these.

If your information forms part of a wider investigation, it may be a while before there are any public results. This doesn’t mean it wasn’t helpful – sometimes the police need to gather as much information as possible before making an arrest, to ensure that there is a high chance of conviction.

Use two-way communication to follow up anonymously

In order to maintain your anonymity, we do not hold any of your contact details. Instead, we will give you a password for our two-way communication system. You can then log in to this service to see if we have any further questions or rewards due. If your tip has led to an arrest or indictment, we will arrange a way to transfer your reward money.

You can also phone us on 800-8477 and quote your code number if you think you are due a reward.

Both of these methods can also be used to give us any further information about your tip.
