Car Theft Prevention Tips Everyone Should Know

Car Theft Prevention Tips Everyone Should Know

Car theft is one of the most prevalent crimes in Bermuda. As cars are so vital to everyday life, it can be hugely disruptive when such an expensive item is taken. Here are some things you can do to prevent your car from being stolen.

Always lock your car

The first defence against car theft is locking your car – even if you are only stopped briefly or you are parked on your own drive. Manually check that it is locked before walking away, as some thieves use signals to block your key fob.

If your car has wing mirrors that fold in when you lock it, it’s even more important to do so. Car thieves will recognise it as unlocked even quicker, and insurance will not cover a stolen car if it is unlocked. Make sure that your windows and sunroof are shut, as well as your doors and boot.

Keep your keys far from the car

Never leave your keys in your car, as this makes your car very easy to steal. You should also be careful where you leave it, even inside your house. Some criminals can fish through your letterbox to take car keys, so make sure they are kept far away. This is especially important if you have keyless unlocking, as thieves can use technology to relay the signal and take your car without the key.

Never leave valuables on display

Leaving valuable items such as phones, wallets, jewellery and musical instruments in your car can make your car a more inviting target. It’s best to take anything valuable out of your car before you leave it, but if you have to leave it behind, make sure it is covered. Cars are more likely to be stolen in dark, quiet areas. Staffed car parks and those with visible CCTV are a safer option.

Ensure external parts are secure

Even if your whole car isn’t stolen, some thieves make a living by selling stolen parts. Ensure that everything is securely attached, using tamper-proof screws. This is especially important for your licence plate, as some car thieves change the number plates of stolen cars to make it harder to recover them.

Watch out for carjackers

Even if you are in the car, some people have methods of taking it. Keep your doors locked in traffic and on country roads.

One technique used by carjackers is colliding with your car and then stealing it once you pull over. In situations like this, it is always better to hand over the vehicle and avoid potential physical harm. If this ever happens, immediately contact the police.
