What Details Make an Anonymous Tip Most Useful?

Anonymous tips play an important role in helping keep Bermuda’s communities safe. Clear, practical information can help authorities understand what may be happening and where to focus attention.

You do not need to know everything or be certain a crime has occurred. Sharing what you have noticed, as accurately as possible, can still make a difference.

Why details matter

Anonymous reports are most helpful when they describe specific concerns rather than general suspicions. Clear details help build a clearer picture of what is happening.

Even small pieces of information can be useful when combined with other reports. It is always better to share what you know than to stay silent.

What to describe clearly

When making a report, focus on what you directly observed or know.

Include the location where the activity happened or is happening. This could be a street name, area, building or nearby landmark.

Share dates and times if you can. Even an approximate time frame, such as “late evening” or “over the past week,” is helpful.

Describe what you saw or heard in simple terms. Stick to facts rather than assumptions about motives or intentions.

People, vehicles and objects

If people are involved, include any non-identifying descriptions you remember. This might include clothing, approximate age, height or distinguishing features. Avoid guessing any personal details.

For vehicles, note the type, colour and any partial licence plate information if known. Even a few letters or numbers can help.

If relevant, describe objects involved, such as tools, packages or items being exchanged. Explain what stood out to you.

Patterns and repeat activity

Reports are especially useful when they mention repeated behaviour. If something has happened more than once, explain how often you have noticed it.

Changes in routine, new activity in a quiet area or behaviour that seems to escalate over time can all be worth reporting.

If you are unsure whether something is criminal, you can still share what you have noticed. You do not need proof.

What not to do

Do not confront anyone involved or put yourself at risk. Personal safety should always come first.

Do not investigate, follow or try to gather evidence. Simply report what you have observed.

Avoid sharing rumours or second-hand stories unless you clearly state that the information was passed on to you.

When to contact the police

If a crime is happening right now or someone is in immediate danger, call the police straight away.

Emergency situations should never be delayed by making an anonymous report.
